Martin Longhurst

Martin Longhurst is a Queensland barrister practising predominantly in criminal law.

Called to the private Bar in 2017, Martin has developed a national criminal practice and accepts briefs in serious and complex criminal matters throughout Queensland and interstate. He has conducted jury trials in multiple States and Territories throughout Australia, appeared in the High Court of Australia, and regularly appears in the Queensland Court of Appeal.

Martin has extensive experience as both leading and junior counsel in serious criminal proceedings. His practice includes murder and attempted murder, drug trafficking, serious sexual offences and other serious criminal offending, together with appeals against conviction and sentence, pre-trial applications, committal proceedings and complex sentencing matters.

Before coming to the Bar, Martin served with the Queensland Police Service, where he attained the rank of Sergeant and worked primarily in prosecutions. He was subsequently admitted as a solicitor before being called to the private Bar.

Martin has appeared in numerous high-profile criminal proceedings and was named in the Courier-Mail’s 2023 list of the best criminal barristers in Queensland.

In addition to his practice, Martin is the convenor of the Bali Criminal Law CPD Conference, an annual professional development conference bringing together members of the judiciary, the Bar, solicitors and prosecutors to consider contemporary issues in criminal law, evidence, procedure and advocacy.

Martin accepts briefs throughout Queensland and interstate in criminal trials, appeals, sentences and related proceedings.
